Younger QBs ready to carry torch

It’s tough for Eli really to get his proper due, but the first six, seven games last year, was there anybody playing better than Eli Manning?”
Back when Billick won his Super Bowl with the 2000 Ravens, the NFL was in a time of transition. John Elway (1998), Dan Marino (1999) and Steve Young (1999) had retired, and Peyton Manning and Brady hadn’t yet turned into superstars. The dearth of consistent quarterback play allowed defensive teams like the Ravens and the Buccaneers (2002) to win Super Bowls with mediocre quarterbacks.
Now the landscape of the league has changed. A pair of quarterbacks from the 2004 draft, Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger(notes), has won two of the past three Super Bowls. While Roethlisberger’s career has hit a speed bump because of off-field incidents, Manning has been steadily improving.
“Oh man, he’s a big-time leader,” Giants receiver Steve Smith said. “Guys obviously are following him, and he’s done a great job of leading us – especially with his work ethic.”
Rivers has enjoyed almost equal success. Since taking the reins from Drew Brees(notes) in 2006, the Chargers have made the playoffs in every season. And as LaDainian Tomlinson’s(notes) offensive impact diminished, the Chargers learned to rely more on Rivers. He’s advanced from a 60-percent passer in his first two seasons as a starter to a 65-percent passer while throwing for more than 4,000 yards in his past two. Last season, he had a higher passer rating (104.4) than either four-time MVP Peyton Manning (99.9) or three-time Super Bowl winner Brady (96.2).
Still, he is chasing two other members of his draft class in Super Bowl rings.
While he doesn’t keep track of Super Bowl XLIII jersey Roethlisberger and Eli Manning on a game-to-game basis, he admitted to following their careers and competing against them. He also knows that his competition comes from quarterbacks outside of his class as well.
“Quarterback play has improved a ton in the last three or four years,” Rivers said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are game-changing type guys – guys that can beat you in a heartbeat or make a play in a heartbeat.”
Though talent has certainly contributed to the proliferation of the passing attack, the league also has more offensive-minded rules and teams are increasingly using three- and four-wide receiver sets and the shotgun.
One beneficiary is Aaron Rodgers, who has emerged from the long shadow of Brett Favre(notes) in Green Bay to become one of the league’s premier playmakers. He is praised for his passing, mostly, as he has started his career with consecutive 4,000-yard seasons. But he is also known for his athleticism and his ability to make plays with his feet – he ran for 316 yards (5.4 yards per carry) last year.
Teammate Charles Woodson(notes), who has played against a lot of great quarterbacks, considers Rodgers the best in the league. And Rodgers has drawn the praise of opponents as well.
“Rodgers, he really comes to mind,” Smith, the Giants receiver, said. “He works so hard, and he’s got so much talent. I think that’s what separates guys, when they’re already good and then they work hard to improve.”
Quarterback play across the league has improved. Five years ago, there were two quarterbacks (Brady and Trent Green(notes)) who threw for more than 4,000 yards. Last season, there were 10. Whereas quarterbacks generally were held back from the starting lineup for two or three years (like Rodgers and Rivers), quarterbacks now are starting roles as rookies.
Matt Ryan(notes), Joe Flacco(notes), and Mark Sanchez(notes) each took their lumps as first-year starters, but they each helped their teams reach the playoffs.
“Mark had a great supporting cast last year, so he was able to grow and mature as the season went along,” Jets receiver Jerricho Cotchery(notes) said. “And then he took it up to another notch in the playoffs. … I think you have to have a quarterback that can beat you nowadays. You have to have a quarterback who can take over the game and put everything on his shoulders and win the game.”
As a result, Ryan, Flacco and Sanchez are among a group of even younger starters who are ahead of the traditional curve for quarterbacks.
“You used to be a little more hesitant, hold back, take a couple of St. Louis Rams jersey years,” Billick said. “It’s now throw ‘em in, sink or swim. Let’s find out about ‘em.”
What the league found out is that they’re ready. Their development means there won’t be another void of top-tier passers for the foreseeable future.
“That’s what you want,” Edwards said. “You really do. You need good quarterback play in the NFL. When the quarterbacks are playing well in the league –and there’s more than one or two of them – fans have hope. And so, all these kids have stepped up to the plate, they’re good quarterbacks. They’re the future stars of the league.”
For Rivers, Rodgers and Eli Manning, the word “future” can be taken out of the conversation. They’re already stars.

For Andrew Comrie-Picard, racing isn’t enough

IRWINDALE, Calif. – I sign a waiver, strap on a helmet and step toward my first rally car ride.
The tires are caked in mud and the car is sprinkled with dust. It’s bright orange and littered with sponsored stickers. Rally cars don’t go quite as fast as stock cars, but they race nfl jerseys over gravel and under any weather. The cars are four-wheel drive and built to handle all elements.
I climb in over the roll bar and fasten myself to a seat with four buckles. The floorboard is metal cut like swiss cheese, and a fire extinguisher is stuffed beneath my seat. Thankfully, the doors lock and the windows are bolted shut. The dashboard looks like the cockpit of a plane, covered with switches and gears and levers. One sticker reads “don’t slow down.”
The driver, Andrew Comrie-Picard, is tall but climbs in the car comfortably and casually. His helmet covers his long brown hair and scruffy beard. He’s the top driver in North America and is competing for the fifth time in the X Games on Saturday, but he’s only taken passengers along a few times. He tells me to raise my hand if I start to feel sick or scared. Then he explains to me this car he built by hand. I try my best to understand. The parts are worth a hundred grand. The time and labor he put into it doubles its value.
He’s about to drive it on a makeshift track built just last week – a track on which he’s had a total of two practice laps. And I’m strapped in right next to him.
The track is dusty, so we wait a moment as a truck with sprinklers turns the gravel into mud. All the while, Andrew revs the engine and readies for what I’ll later find out is called a “launch control start,” in which he revs his engine to build a boost before dumping the clutch and propelling his car forward.
He dumps the clutch. Off we go.

Andrew was born to be a rally car racer, but he was raised to be so much more.
His parents were racers. Forty-five years ago, his mom and some of her friends set out hay stacks on a frozen pond, and hell, they just started ice racing. She and her friends formed a club and continued racing for years. His dad was a rally car racer, but it was different back then – the courses were longer and not quite as quick. “I wish I had been born later,” says his mom, Ellen. “I would love to be doing what Andrew is doing now.”
He grew up on a 40-acre wheat farm and horse ranch in Alberta, Canada. He was surrounded by earth – dirt and mud and trees and crops – and learned to love them all. He also loved to make stuff – and to take stuff apart. When he was in elementary school, his mother came home to find that Andrew had dismantled all the locks in the house. She gave him a look, and he put them back in place.
“Growing up in the country, on the farm, it gives you a couple of things,” Andrew says. “First off, it gives you a lot of free time. It also separates you from any facilities. You have to figure everything out on your own, which makes you look at things in a different way. It makes you innovative and resourceful.”
Before long, he was taking apart tractor engines and sneaking behind whatever wheel he could see over. When he was 8, he blew across the backyard in a snowmobile. By 10, he’d gotten a dirt bike from relatives – against the wishes of his mother – and constructed a ramp in the woods behind the house for it. At 12, he was drifting the family’s pickup truck through their pasture.
The cops caught him and dragged him to the door to tell his parents “to keep an eye on him,” but they didn’t give him a ticket. The chief of police’s son gave Andrew piano lessons.
“He seemed to be born on wheels,” Ellen says, “rather than on two legs.”
His mom hatched a plan to balance Andrew’s mechanical mind and wild heart. She wanted him to compete with remote-control cars, so she bought him one from Radio Shack. He took it apart, put it back together and came back to her a few minutes later. “You know,” he told her, “this isn’t very well built.” He became the fifth-best remote control racer in the world by the time he was a teenager.
His mother could see this race Andrew was already embarking on, that his life was taking a launch control start toward becoming a driver. But she didn’t want the sport to define him. She sat him down and talked about one of Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey his heroes, Wayne Gretzky. The NHL star was famous and successful, but would only be remembered as a hockey star. Ellen, a law professor who valued education, wanted more for her son.
And even young Andrew, consumed by cars, didn’t believe that racing could ever be a career choice. So he delayed his driving career. For 10 years.
He started at the University of Toronto and ended, five degrees later, at Oxford University in England. He started with a choral scholarship (he was a baritone), but much of his work explored human behavior, which, he says, has helped him race. He was also a competitive rower. And wrote plays. And acted in them. And he ran the wine society. Sometimes still he goes to the south of France to pick grapes.
He’s a Renaissance man hidden in a rally car.

Back in the car, the engine screams and sends us soaring down the first 50 yards of the track.
He spins the car 180 degrees around safety cones. The back tires drift as we splash through a puddle and climb up a hill and take a turn toward the blind corner. He lets the car drift again, the bumper less than a foot from the right wall I think we’re going to slam into. Before I know it, the car isn’t facing the wall, it’s parallel to it and Andrew is throttling it down the straightaway.
The car sways back and forth at his will, coming within feet of photographers who are frantically trying to focus their cameras and increase their shutter speeds to capture him.
Can anything ever capture Andrew?
The five college degrees could not. The extracurricular activities could not. He got his first taste of rally car racing – after years of dabbling in other motorsports – at the Monte Carlo Historique in France. He and his friends Leigh and Michael bought three beatup Volvos on the cheap and spent their nights and weekends working in an old barn to create one usable car out of the parts from all three. Then the first night they took it into London, it was stolen. They had no insurance, so they were forced to settle for a cheaper car that they hadn’t put any heart into. But the new car was more robust and ready for the race.
“We thought it would be this polite, gentleman’s race,” Leigh says, “but it was a full-out road race.”
They rode in style. Riding with three passengers isn’t illegal, but it’s highly unusual because it adds more weight to the car. One man drove, one man navigated, and one man functioned as the hospitality manager in the back, serving cappuccinos and selecting the music. They even had their ski equipment in the trunk for another adventure after the race.
Andrew didn’t drive – even though he was the best driver – because he was the best navigator. The trio won its class.
“I knew right away that I’d be good at it,” he says. “It was the most natural thing in the world.”
After college, Andrew and Leigh spent a year touring Europe and living in an old VW van. “He always seems to have the right the car for the right phases of his life,” Leigh says.
He moved back to Canada and got a summer law job in Toronto. With his first paycheck, he bought an ex-factory 1995 Lada Samara for $2,000.
He climbed the corporate ladder as an entertainment lawyer in New York. His income was impressive and steady. But it became clear that this wasn’t the right career for him. “I was sort of sorry to see him go into law,” Ellen says. The client list didn’t impress him, and the money was only important for his car collection. With every upgrade in pay, he upgraded his wheels. He started to rally again on weekends.
As if practicing law wasn’t enough of Super Bowl XLIV jersey a grind, he hardly slept on weekends. One time, he flew out of New York on Friday to British Columbia for a race. When he arrived, his car’s engine was broken so he and his crew worked all Friday night to replace it, but the replacement didn’t fit properly. So they stayed up all night again, raced on Sunday, flew back to New York and walked back into the office on Monday morning.
“You can’t suppress that stuff that you really wanna do,” he says. “I found little ways to get back into racing.”
After six years, he joined the Manhattan choir. In some strange way, changing out of his three-piece suit and into a choir robe transformed him. He was ready to live the steady life. Then one Friday afternoon, a big entertainment company called and announced a new deal with his law firm. All the senior associates – Andrew among them – went out for dinner and drinks. It was the only time they could celebrate because the rest of their weekend would be spent working.
Andrew had a thought that night, that even if he became a partner, he still wouldn’t be pleased with his life.
So he did what almost everyone dreams of but never has the nerve to do: He walked into his boss’s office and quit. He looked out the 31st-floor window for the last time and took a leap of faith.

I pick up my stomach where I left it at the start and am ready to watch Andrew more closely on the second try.
There’s never a moment where he looks the slightest bit concerned. His hands are all over the car – flipping levers and switching gears. His eyes dart among the many monitors flashing critical information for our safety. And of football jerseys course, he’s watching the road.
“He’s got a gift in that way – he can focus,” Ellen says. “The more pressure, the more calm he gets.”
It’s a combination of instincts and science. He knows this car like he knows his own body. He knows what it can handle and what it can’t, and how it will respond in almost any situation.
We come around that blind corner again, and I trust him more this time – but it’s still startling. He slams the brakes and the ride is finished.
“Man, sorry it was so slippery,” he says to me. “We could have gone a lot faster.”

Hard lessons led to Latos’ breakout season

Each time he takes the mound, Mat Latos(notes) bends, plants a finger in the dirt and scribbles his grandfather’s initials, “RMH.” Each time he throws a pitch, his shoulder sneaks out of his shirt a little and reveals a tattoo – a sky above a scroll above a bed of cheap nfl jerseys roses that contains those same letters.
On the day Roger Marshall Hudspeth died, he insisted that his 12-year-old grandson play in a baseball tournament rather than stay by his side. That is Latos’ final and fondest memory of his grandfather, a humble man who put others before himself and relished the thought of his grandson succeeding on the mound.
Flash forward 10 years, and Latos is the premier pitcher for a surprising San Diego Padres club barreling toward the postseason. Flash back three years, and he was a cocky 19-year-old junior college pitcher convinced he was ready for the majors.
“I’d probably beat the crap out of 19-year-old me,” Latos said. “I’d probably hate myself too. But I’ve learned.”
He had been a first-round talent in high school but fell to the Padres in the 11th round of the 2006 draft because, a source said, he was demanding an unrealistic bonus and already was exhibiting an unseemly arrogance. He pitched for Broward (Fla.) junior college the following spring and signed with the Padres for $1.25 million a week before the 2007 draft. As he climbed through the minor leagues, Latos got away with his me-first attitude until he collided with Padres roving pitching instructor Mike Couchee.
“It was almost like we wanted to fistfight each other sometimes,” Latos said, “but he never gave up on me.”
After a poor bullpen session one day, Latos and Couchee bickered until Couchee decided he’d had enough. He asked Latos if he would be mouthing off like this to Padres manager Bud Black. Latos said no. “Then grow up,” Latos remembers Couchee telling him, “and go about your business as if you were in the majors.”
“A light turned on,” Latos said. “I decided to quit acting like I was 16 years old.”
The conversation became a key step in the long process of Latos’ maturation. When he was called up to the Padres in July 2009, he still had attitude issues. He was quick to confront veterans and was one of the loudest guys in the clubhouse, a know-it-all. In 10 starts last season, he was decidedly average, going 4-5 with a 4.62 ERA in 50 2/3 innings.
He demanded the attention of Washington Redskins jersey veterans but ignored their advice.
“Last year it was, ‘Look at me, listen to what I have to say,’ ” Paders closer Heath Bell(notes) said. “Between the coaches and the players – I know I yelled at him a couple of times – we talked to him. This season, he’s done such a great job of listening.”
Latos, 22, has been the Padres’ best starter all year. He leads the team in wins (12), ERA (2.36) and strikeouts (125); he also leads baseball with a .191 opponents batting average and is second to Cliff Lee(notes) with a .256 opponents on-base percentage.
Most importantly, the first-place Padres are 9-1 during his last 10 starts.
Part of Latos’ improvement has come from technical changes to his delivery and the development of a slider and curveball to complement his heat. Primarily, though, the improvement is due to an attitude overhaul. It’s difficult for any 21-year-old thrust into the majors, especially one who needed to grow up some.
The Padres are ideal for someone of Latos’ temperament. San Diego is a quiet media town, and the team is led by the low-key Black, baseball’s only pitcher-turned-manager. The veteran pitchers – especially Bell, Jon Garland(notes) and Chris Young – didn’t dismiss Latos after his early failings, but instead helped him develop.
From Garland, Latos learned patience, to let the game come to him. From Young, Latos learned to attack hitters relentlessly. And from Bell, Latos learned to trust in and rely on his teammates. All that wisdom combined with his talent transformed Latos into one of the best pitchers in the league.
“He’s a good listener,” Black said. “And more importantly, now he’s good at applying what he’s told.”
In the end, there wasn’t just one moment when Latos finally understood what it meant to be a pro. It was a process, beginning with the humble example of his grandfather and continuing with Couchee’s challenge and the callouts from colleagues.
When he reported to spring training this season, everyone could see he had matured. He was seen but not heard. He would quietly approach other pitchers for advice and listen in on their conversations to absorb knowledge.
“When you look at him now, he’s not selfish,” Bell said. “He’s very humble. Sometimes you just get caught in that stuff as a young pitcher. He was that way last year, and he got called out and now he’s gotten better. Now he’s one of Tennessee Titans jersey the best pitchers in the big leagues that no one knows about – and that’s fine with us.”
Soon enough, everyone will know about Latos – and they’ll know about his arm, not his mouth. He has always honored his grandfather’s wish to continue to play, but now he also honors Roger Marshall Hudspeth with his humility.

Walker says county addressing Mental Health Complex problems

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker issued the following statement Thursday night regarding problems at the county's Mental Health Complex:
"I take extremely seriously the needs of nfl jerseys those individuals with mental illness in our community and those families and individuals who care for them.
"The county has already begun several proactive steps, including changes in staffing, oversight, protocol and forming a community advisory group to ensure that the county is successful at caring for people suffering from mental illness."
Walker's remarks were contained in an e-mail response to questions on the complex and the disciplinary actions against any county employees.
Walker said the decision to suspend Karl Strelnick, a Mental Health Complex psychiatrist, on Thursday was "a personnel decision based on efforts to improve patient care."
Strelnick was involved in two cases that led to federal declarations that patients were in jeopardy.
Walker said decisions on any other potential disciplinary charges of Kansas City Chiefs jersey Mental Health Complex employees would be made by Geri Lyday, interim director of the county's Department of Health and Human Services, and by the interim administrator of the county's Behavioral Health Division. That person has not yet been named, following the demotion of John Chianelli, the current behavioral health administrator.

ProHealth names Arizona executive as successor to retiring CEO

ProHealth Care has named an Arizona executive as its new president and chief executive to succeed Ford Titus.
Susan Edwards will begin her new position as president and chief executive in late September.
Titus, who announced his plans to retire cheap nfl jerseys earlier this year, will remain at ProHealth to help with the transition and handle special projects until April, when he turns 65.
Edwards most recently was president of the Arizona region of Banner Health System.
The health system, based in Phoenix, has 22 hospitals and other facilities in Arizona, Alaska, California, Colorado, Nevada, Wyoming and Nebraska. It had $4.7 billion in revenue last year.
Before joining Banner Health, Edwards was executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. John's Health System in Detroit and interim president and chief executive of the system's St. John's Hospital, ProHealth said in a release.
"Susan Edwards is exceptionally well-qualified to succeed Ford Titus and assume the top leadership position at ProHealth Care," John Raasch, chairman of ProHealth's board of directors, said in the statement. "Her breadth of Minnesota Vikings jersey experience combined with a collaborative spirit and commitment to community involvement make her well suited to successfully navigate the system through the challenges facing the health care industry today and in the future."
In her new job, Edwards will oversee a health care system that includes Waukesha Memorial Hospital, the third-largest in the Milwaukee area, and that had $773.4 million in revenue in its fiscal year ended Sept. 30.
But ProHealth, which employs roughly 6,000 people, also faces new competition from an Aurora hospital in Summit that opened in March. Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, part of ProHealth's system, is less than five miles away.
ProHealth reported sharply lower operating income of $1.3 million for the quarter ended June 30, the first full quarter in which the new Aurora hospital was opened. That was down from operating income of $5.3 million in the comparable quarter a year earlier and $7.2 million in the quarter that ended March 31.
In addition to Arizona and Michigan, Edwards has worked in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She recently served as chairwoman of the Phoenix chapter of the American Heart Association and on the board of directors for the Valley of Miami Dolphins jersey the Sun United Way.
Edwards, born and raised in Sparta, N.C., holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Emory and Henry College, a master's of health administration from Duke University and a law degree from Wayne State University.

Haynesworth gets to play with starters

It took far longer than Albert Haynesworth(notes) ever imagined it would.
But in the first quarter of the Washington Redskins’ third preseason game tonight, Haynesworth was inserted with football jerseys the first team. He’s been lined up at right end. The irony of that, of course, is that Haynesworth boycotted the entire offseason program because he was upset at having to play nose tackle in Jim Haslett’s 3-4 scheme.
We’ll see how this plays out. Haynesworth has created a storm even since showing up, steaming last week after he was forced to play in the second half. This situation remains fluid but the fact that the team is now using him with the starters indicates he’s making strides.
Who knows? Maybe Haynesworth will go bonkers after the game at the New Meadowlands Stadium against the New York Jets.

Two greats get their due

Many football fans might not know much about Chris Hanburger and Les Richter. Frankly, neither of them were very high on the radar of the Pro Football Hall of Fame before this year.
But this week, the Hall’s Seniors Committee, ofnfl jerseys which I am a member, convened in Canton and voted to make the linebackers finalists for the 2011 Hall of Fame class.
