30 Dec 10 Oklahoma City Thunder: Contender or Pretender?

Elsa/Getty ImagesThroughout the season, the Oklahoma City Thunder has been defying the odds by sustaining winning streaks and playing stifling defense. They have played out of their minds all year when most analysts predicted them to either finish just below the top eight teams in the Western Conference or just make the playoffs. The Thunder have gotten as high as fourth in the Western Conference, and could possibly finish there by the end of the season. The question is: Are the Oklahoma City Thunder a contender or a pretender? Can they legitimately Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
pose a threat to the top teams in the Western Conference? The top four teams in the Western Conference right now are the Lakers, Jazz, Mavericks, and Suns. These teams have been consistent all year, and so have the Oklahoma City Thunder. They have gone on a nine game winning streak, and have stayed within striking distanceofwinning the Northwest Division. They have stayed consistent all season by playing great team defense; they hold teams to 96.9 points per game, and also limit all opponents 44 percent shooting from the field. They also have Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
one of the best players in the NBA in Kevin Durant. He has made major strides this year in every category, and is willing his team to wins.Durantisn't their only good player, they also have Russell Westbrook, who has the talent to be a future All-Star, and is already contributing a lot to the team. They also have a couple of young up-and-coming players in James Harden, Serge Ibaka, and Eric Maynor. These playershave contributed to the team in different areas.James Harden has provided them with a scorer off the bench with his 9.9 points per game, Arizona Cardinals jersey
Serge Ibaka has given them a much-needed shot blocker with his 1.3 blocks per game, and Eric Maynor has given them a backup point guard. This team has proven all year that they are contenders, and they will continue to prove it. This team is ready, and they should win their first series and pose a threat to the team they play in the second round.

29 Dec 10 Mavericks' Old Age Crown Gives Dallas-San Antonio Rivalry New Look

Chris Graythen/Getty ImagesA Dallas Mavericks fangleeful after his squad rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the San Antonio Spurs 112-103 in a January tiltshouted at awomanwearing a Tim Duncan jersey. He pointed at the ATT Center court."Geriatric! Geriatric!"That fanshould avoid the rest ofthis column. When the Spurs take the floor tonight against their inter-state rivals, they should get comfy in the confines of theAmerican Airlines Center. They might as well stay for the duration of the week.Barring a miracle upset by theNew York Jets jersey
Golden State Warriors at the Rose Garden, the Spurs will face the Mavericks in a first-round rematch. If Nate McMillan's resilient Portland Trail Blazers beat the defending champion L.A.Lakers and the Oklahoma City Thunder on back-to-back nights without the services of franchise starBrandon Roy, they will not stumble against the woeful Warriors. If the Spurs win tonight and the Warriors find a way to take their mastery of the Blazers at home on the road, the Alamo City's hoops squad would move up to 6th.A Jazz win and Mavericks loss would net Utah the second seed and Northwest Division. If the Suns and Spurs win, well, a certain silver and black point guard would lick his chops at the thought of another playoff meeting with Steve Nash.Phoenix, though, played Tuesday night and expended a lot of energy in whooping the Denver Nuggets. In other words, the Spurs should bet on playing the Mavericks this weekend. If they do another postseason tango, differences on both sides will make the series as competitive as the classic in 2006.Manu Ginobili did not play in last year's opening round. If he can pour 32 points on Ron Artest, he can torch any defender Rick Carlisle throws his way.Spurs killer Josh Howard now plays for the Washington Wizards. The Mavs traded him to get Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood.Keith Bogans, Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, George Hill, and Dejuan Blair will play significant roles for San Antonio. Hill was on the roster last year, but Popovich declared in early April, "this playoff probably isn't for him."Some things have not changed.Dirk Nowitzki and Tim Duncan still play at an elite level. Jason Terry still pantomimesan airborne jetafter he hits big jumpers.Jason Kidd will start at the point opposite Parker. One component of this antagonism, however, has changed dramatically since 2006.Just after the buzzer soundedThe Mavericks boast the highest average age in the league.Dallas is the oldest team in the league.Dallas is the oldest team in the league.Dallas is the oldest team in the league.Dallas is the oldest team in the league.I will repeat this fact until it sinks in for everyone planning to write about this match-up.In 2006 and 2009, the Spurs ranked as the Oakland Raiders jersey
NBA'seldest statesmen. Since those fateful series, GM R.C. Buford has lowered his roster's average age by more than two years.Blame it on more than just D-Leaguers and 22-year-old foul machineIan Mahinmi. Hill and Blair, 23 and 20 respectively, will figure prominently in the playoff rotation. The former merits consideration as the sport's most improved player. These playoffs are for Hill.Mavs' GM Donnie Nelson's roster has continued a steady climb. The only players younger than 30 sure to get some playoffburn are 25-year-old J.J. Barea and 22-year-old Rodrigue Beaubois. How much time Carlisle plans to give a rookie who often plays like one remains to be seen (I'm not saying Blair does not do the same, just that he's farther along in his pro-level development).Deshawn Stevenson, 29, deservesa fewminutes for his defensive abilities.Ginobili and Terry boast identical ages. Nowitzki carries comparable playoff mileage to Duncan, even if the German forward is two years younger. Now, no one can say the Spurs are too old to beat the Mavs.In 2006, too many gullible analysts bought into such jocosity. I never did.Dallas won in seven games, they said, because of fresher legs and younger bodies.Nonsense.The Mavs triumphed because they were three or four plays better than the Spurs.A pair of critical crunch-timemistakes by Duncan and Ginobili proved too costly to overcome. What if Duncan had attacked the basket at the end of Game Three instead of settling for an out-of-rhythm jump-shot?What if Ginobili had followed Gregg Popovich's instructions not to foul a shooter at the end of regulation in Game Seven? That overtime loss continues to haunt San Antonio. It gives Dallas a rare edge not present in first-round losses to Golden State and New Orleans and a second-defeat to Denver. The age comparison, however, does make this go-around more compelling. As if this rivalry needed any more intrigue. The Mavs may well kick the Spurs back to that "muddy ass thing called a Riverwalk."Another series in which Nowitzki walks away with more wins than Duncan would surprise no one who has watched these two teams battle.Neither of the aging stars, though, has reached thegeriatric mile-marker. Philadelphia Eagles jersey
Nowitzki averaged better than 26 points in arguably the best season of his career. Duncan averaged better than 18 points and 10 rebounds. That delirious Mavs'fan should take note of a now indisputable fact.If the franchises were indeed competing to get into a proverbial NBA nursing home, his would get there first.

28 Dec 10 Is the Lakers-Jazz Series Already Won? Phil Jackson's History Says It Is

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images45-0. That's a remarkable number regardless of how you look at it, but considering it is Los Angeles Lakers' coach Phil Jackson' playoff record after winning the first game of a series is nearly inconceivable.Take a second and let the significance of that number and accomplishment permeate through the depths of your mind, and even then, it would still be hard to grasp the true meaning of the achievement. This phenomenon has played out 24 times while Jackson was coach of the Chicago Bulls where he won six NBA titles, and another 21 while he has been head coach in Los Angeles, where he is currently seeking his fifth championship.I'm not sure if Jackson will win his 11th NBA championship, but for the Utah Jazz, the chances of New York Jets jersey
winning this current Western Conference Semifinal series against the Lakers was slim to begin with. The Jazz were decided underdogs before the series began, and after letting a four point lead in the fourth quarter of Game Oneslip away, they are now at the mercy of the worst type of playoff history imaginable. The odds don't just say the Jazz's task of dethroning the Lakers will be difficult, history says Utah is facing an impossible journey. The Jazz have already lost their last 15 games at Staples Center including the playoffs, and the Lakers have eliminated them from the postseason the past two years. The Lakers have advantages in the paint against the Jazz, and they have Kobe Bryant, who scored 11 points in a four minute span of the fourth quarter, and seven straight to erase what had been a four point Utah lead. This was a game Utah dearly needed to win. This fact was evident on each player's face as the realization they were headed to yet another defeat in Los Angeles began to settle in.I wouldn't say the Utah players were Oakland Raiders jersey
demoralized, but they were cognizant of the long odds they had to overcome in order to pull off a Laker upset. The road will only get more difficult from here.Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum combined for 33 points and 22 rebounds in the post which was comparable to the Utah duo of Paul Milsap and Carlos Boozer. Bryant, however, was the trump card.Bryant is the type of player who has helped Jackson's sterling record persevere through the years, because he is well versed in the art of finishing off opponents in close games.Much like another of Jackson's players in Chicago, Bryant has the ability to take over a game, and his instinct in those situations are much like Michael Jordan, who always went for the kill when he smelled blood in the water.Utah point guard Deron Williams is a marvelous player, and his skills alone are enough to ensure the Jazz will win at least a couple of games during the course of the series. But Bryant is the player who has the ability to win a close game or close out a tough series, and with the spector of Jackson's record aiding him, it'shard to picture Utah defying history. After all, the Lakers have lost the first game of a playoff series and won the series, but they have NEVER won the first game of a series, and subsequently lost, so who are thePhiladelphia Eagles jersey
Jazz to tempt that type of legacy?Utah will likely give a valiant effort in their endeavour and their journey will end in the same manner it has for the last 45 teams who have been unfortunate enough to lose the opening game of a series against Jackson.I know some will say I'm biased in my prediction, but this isn't just a fan of the Los Angeles Lakers talking, it's history as well.

27 Dec 10 Washington Need a Wall: Wizards Should Use No. 1 Pick Wisely

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images At age 28, he is in his prime years. Over the past several seasons, he has been considered to be one of the premier point guards in the NBA. In 2008, he signed a six-year, $111 million contract. In short, on the surface, Gilbert Arenas is the face of the Washington Wizards franchise, and he is just about everything they could want. With the Wizards securing the top overall selection in 2010 NBA Draft on Tuesday night, their situation with Arenas set to return from his suspension would seemingly place the Indianapolis Colts jersey
team pick in question. But it shouldn.Yes, Arenas is a very good point guard who is a proficient scorer, can create his own shot, and get to the rim in a variety of fashions. But the reality is that, as his recent run-in with the law proves, he not the guy you want to be the face of your franchise.Following a three-year stretch from 2004 to 2007 where he averaged 25-plus points per game, Arenas became plagued by injuries, and he made a mere 15 appearances in two seasons (starting 10 of them). His averages plunged, and it looked like the huge deal he signed in 2008 could potentially be a bust. But he rebounded, and reasserted himself as the Agent Zero.Kicking off the 2009-2010 NBA campaign, Arenas stormed the court, averaging 22.6 points and 7.2 assists in the 32 games he played in.It was a terrific start to the season, one that should have cemented him once again as one of the best scoring point guards in the NBA, and one that should have led the Wizards to a far more competitive season than they had. But, on December 24, when it was revealed that Arenas carried unloaded guns into the Wizards locker room, and then on January 1, when it became apparent that he and teammate Javaris Crittendon had brandished said guns in the locker room following a dispute about gambling debts, everything changed. His immaturity revealed, Arenas followed his guilty plea with a suspension from the NBA and a two-year probation sentence (along with a 30-day stay in a halfway house). Now, it cannot be denied that Arenas is a talent. In the first 32 games of the season, he proved that he still had what it takes to be an elite playmaker in the NBA. Undoubtedly, had Arenas played the entire season at the level he had been playing at prior to his suspension, the Wizards would have been far more competitive than they were. But being the face of a franchise means more than scoring points, dishing out assists, and making highlight real plays.Being the spokesman and the image of an NBA franchise means that Arenas also needs to be a leader. He needs to be a person the team can rally around, one who can look at the harsh critics and take the blame in stride, and who can emotionally rally the players around him when momentum is going in the wrong direction. Now answer me this: Does Gilbert Arenas do any of that?Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash, and Dwyane Wade are all perennial superstars because they do so much more than fill the stat sheet. They make other people better, and they are true leaders on and off the court.Arenas is not in that group. He not even close.Enter John Wall.He young, he athletic, he skilled, and he a relatively high character guy. He an unusual talent, one that may Jacksonville Jaguars jersey
not come around again for a long time.Wall may not be an All-Star right away, and he may not raise Washington competitiveness to playoff potential right away, but he is the best piece for them to start building with.Looking at the situation, unless the Wizards are able to net an overwhelming haul for the No. 1 pick, how can they justify not selecting Wall? The Wizards are in something of a sorry state at the moment. The team is terrible and nowhere near the playoffs, the "leader" of the team missed over half the season because of a gun charge in the locker room, andwith the exception of Clevelandthere aren many sports cities out there that are more depressing than Washington, D.C.Wall would instantly re-energize the franchise. He the biggest name available. Unless Washington is suddenly in the running for LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, or Chris Bosh, there is nobody out there who can bring as much excitement to a franchise as Wall can.Wall immediately brings attention and excitement to the team. Put Josh Howard and Wall on the floor together, and there could be some fireworks on display. Now, imagine for a second, if Arenas is able to get his act together and come back and mesh with Wall? That a combo that I would be dying to see work together.Wall will not make the Wizards a playoff team right away. Washington needs a few other pieces to go along with Wall to turn them into a squad that can compete with Orlando and Boston (and possibly Cleveland, depending on where LeBron James ends up) for superiority in the East. But Wall would bring a buzz and an excitement back to D.C. basketball that hasn been around in awhile. He can be the face of the Wizards franchise, has the potential to be an all-world point guard, and in a few years, with some grooming, could be mentioned in the same breath as Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Derron Williams, and Rajon Rondo.None of this is guaranteed, but the chance that it will succeed is better than accepting the status quo in Washington Kansas City Chiefs jersey
right now, and it is certainly better than bringing in a mid-level free agent or someone else from this draft class.Had Arenas not forced Washington hand with his antics, Washington could be looking to address other needs right now, and they could be looking for his sidekick or that one final piece to push them into the top tier in the Eastern Conference. But that not reality. The reality is that basketball in Washington is not in a good place, and the reality is that Wall would go a long way in helping to fix that problem.Washington needs Wall. For more sports commentary, check out Water Cooler Sports .

26 Dec 10 Chris Bosh Leaves Toronto, Signs With Olympiakos of Greece [SATIRE]

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesSATIRE Former NBA All Star and Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh announced late Friday night that he has signed to play basketball next season overseas in Greece.Bosh confirmed rumors that he would not be playing in Toronto next season, shocking his Twitter followers and Cleveland Browns jersey
fans, by signing a deal with Olympiakos of the Greece 1-A League."I wanted to move on in my career. Take a step that most people don't take. Olympiakos is that step," said Bosh in a statement released to the press.Olympiakos is currently is the championship for the 1-A League, battling the Panathinaiko Reds for the title. The Greens are ranked second-best in all of Europe. Coming into the off-season, Bosh was one of many highly-touted free agents, a list that includes the likes of LeBron James, Dirk Nowitzki, Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson, and Ray Allen. Bosh's signing eliminates one of the top money makers from that list. His contract is reportedly worth four years, $10 million. Why accept such a small contract when he could have made over quadruple that in America? Why not let Bosh answer that. "I'm a trail blazer. And not on Portland. I couldn't do that team. Europe ain't never seen nothin' like this before." After losing the eighth and final playoff spot in the East to Chicago in the final week of the regular season, Bosh immediately began searching for options. He asked his Twitter followers whether he should stay or go, then narrowed his desired destinations down to five. None of those was Olympiakos or any other Euro team. This signing may open up doors for other Dallas Cowboys jersey
players in the NBA. "Everybody wants to play in Europe, right?" Bosh posted on his Twitter page. In his statement, he wrote "it's difficult to leave such a great basketball city in Toronto (lol), but I am moving on." Many Raptors' fans will have an outcry over this statement. He will join former NBA star Josh Childress over on Olympiakos. Childress leftthe Atlanta Hawks, taking his afro with him toGreece. Bosh will take his thin dreadlocks withhim. "I'm also going to teach Greek hoops fans a bit about American hairstyles. They're going to have to watcheitherHairspray orDenver Broncos jersey
Grease."Rumors are circulating that ESPN will cover Bosh's first game in his European career. While nothing is certain, he is expected to begin his contract next week in Game Four of the championship series. "This run in Greece will be great. Sorry, America, but I just can't play pro ball every day with you guys. I'll have fun with Olympiakos. I'm as sure as purple platypus.

25 Dec 10 Miami Heat: Are They Starting To Find Their Groove?

Wade and Lebron decide whose turn it is to have the ball at a recent gameGregory Shamus/Getty Images"Miami Heat: Are They Back on Track Now?""Heat Bucking a Trend""Heat Moving in Right Direction""Miami Heat Being Warriors on the Road"These are all headlines for stories written in the last few days, throughout the Heat's newest giant accomplishment-a 5 game winning streak. Everyone's excited, fans and reporters around the country are beginning to wonder if they've finally figured it out. Has the "King" finally built himself some sort of respectable kingdom in South Beach? As one looks at the chatter around the web regarding the Heat you read quotes like:"It was just a matter of time for the Heat...""Don't look now but the Miami Heat are good.""Miami Heat have won five straight Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
games."These are quotes from real people around the web, or headlines from real articles around the web as well. All of this inspires me to ask one simple question:WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?Kindly allow me to be your "Heat Reality Check" for the next several paragraphs please. First of all, the Heat are not a 72-win team, this is obvious right now, however I'll go even further. The Heat are not a 60-win team either. In fact, the Heat are barely a 50-win team. How many games will the Heat win this season? How many games will the Heat win this season?40-507.1%50-6045.7%60-7040.5%70+6.7%Total votes: 506After all, how many bad teams can you play in a season? 50? This Miami Heat team has done nothing, it's been far less than impressive, and with injuries piling up they should be thanking God the Eastern Conference is so bad, otherwise they might have ended up getting swept by someone like the Celtics in the first round as a low seed. Let me show you what I'm talking about by taking a deeper look at the Heat.First of all, this ridiculous five-game winning streak they're on? Between Cleveland, Detroit, Washington, Milwaukee and Atlanta there's only one legitimate playoff team in there;Atlanta;and they lost their superstar to injury prior to the Heat game;there's hardly any honor in beating a broken team. The combined record of these five teams is 41-61, 20 games under .500. If you take the Hawks out of that equation (they're not really a 14-8 team without Johnson is my guess) then you're talking about a 27-53 combined record. People aren't really talking about this five-game streak like it means anything are they? The thing is, this five-game streak is actually the perfect representative of the Heat, that will continue to be true after they lose to the Jazz in Utah tomorrow night. The Heat really haven't beaten anyone all season. They have a grand total of three wins against teams over the .500 mark; the Hawks (already went over that one), the Magic early on, and the Suns (a team only two games over .500 with no sort of interior defense that Bosh took advantage of). That is the Reebok Oakland Raiders #21 Nnamdi Asomugha Realtree camo Jersey
combined record of all the teams the Heat have beaten. Precisely 65 games under .500. Sure they have the most 20+ point wins, as was revealed recently on ESPN, but have they beaten anyone they might see in the postseason? Not really. The story goes deeper than that even, as if we're not deep enough in mediocrity already. Many times you'll see in sports;particularly football;a team that is the beneficiary of playing a very poor schedule. Teams that haven't faced anyone yet are teams you can't really get a measure on how good they are because they've only played very bad teams. The Miami Heat are not one of those teams, because beginning on opening night in Boston, and running all the way through Wednesday night they've played good teams, they just haven't really stood a chance against them. For all their numbers, whether it be the 14 wins, or the second-rated defense in the league;allowing only 91.7 ppg, first in the league in turnovers with just over 12 per game, or outscoring opponents by an average of 8.6 points per game;we've seen almost none of that when they've played winning teams. How long until the Heat win their first titleHow long until the Heat win their first titleThis season56.9%Next season31.8%It's gonna take a while9.1%Never2.2%Total votes: 418In the games the Heat have lost this year, the Heat are giving up 101.5 points per game, and they're losing by an average of seven points per game. They rank 16th in the league in rebounding, and 28th in the league in offensive rebounds. They also can't work together, ranking 22nd in thee league in assists per game with only 20. So to sum it all up: the Heat can't beat good teams, but they can beat up on bad teams. They can't rebound, and they don't pass. They play great defense against poor teams, but when you challenge them they back down and give up more than 100 points per game, while only scoring 93 or so of their own points. It's not all doom and gloom. This Heat team is going to be good, they just won't be good this year. The Heat are missing a lot of things: a center, a point guard, a coach that knows anything about offense, a gameplan, the list goes on. I do believe they will fix this though, I just don't think it will happen until they can add a few legit pieces;and no, I don't count Eric Dampier as being a legit answer at center. In looking at the free agent market in the upcoming summer you can see several potential options as guys that might want to come in and play at either position in an Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers #86 Hines Ward Realtree camo Jersey
effort to win a championship (and not mind taking a team-friendly deal of course). Players like Jason Williams (Orlando), Leandro Barbosa (Toronto), and Mo Williams (Cleveland) are guys that might look good at the one in a Heat uniform and are all scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season. To fill the five-spot you might see Pat Riley look at players like Kendrick Perkins (Boston), Tyson Chandler (Dallas), or even Yao Ming (Houston) who are all also scheduled to become unrestricted free agents this offseason.Beyond personnel, either Eric Spoelstra needs a serious change of gameplan, or the Heat need to bring someone else in. Can anyone tell me what has changed in terms of offensive philosophy for the Heat this year, or what has changed from Mike Brown's philosophy when coaching LeBron over the past few years? Wasn't his plan "give LeBron the ball and watch what happens"? Wasn't that the same plan for D-Wade the last few years in Miami? How do you not get that this doesn't work? Watch the Heat and then watch the Lakers, the Magic or the Celtics and you'll notice a significant difference on offense;those three teams actually run plays! You'll notice a great deal of movement off the ball, you'll see screens being set, players working to get open, and actual real, set plays being run. When you watch the Heat it's as if you're watching the most talented playground team in the world. Can someone please tell me what Spoelstra actually does for this team? It's clear he doesn't call plays. He doesn't direct the offense in any way. Does he just flip the coin to determine who is going to get the ball this quarter, Wade or LeBron? You can have all the talent in the world, but until it works together it doesn't really matter too much does Reebok Pittsburgh Steelers James Harrison Realtree camo Jersey
it?At some point I expect the Heat to get these concepts. These players understand defense wins games, so they don't need someone to call them out on that, what they need is a coach to help put them in positions where they can win the game. A coach for whom standing around watching the other drive the ball isn't satisfactory. A coach who can get down to business with the clipboard and draw up some plays to run every now and then. The Heat need this more than anything, because no matter who you add to the roster, whether it's two of the top five players in the game, or 12 great role players you just aren't going to contend with the top teams in this league until you start playing like a team on both ends of the court, all game long, against every team in the league, not just the bad ones.

How far will the Heat go this year? How far will the Heat go this year?Lose in first round2.5%Lose in second round9.0%Lose in conference championships18.9%Lose in Finals11.1%Win it all56.9%Won't make the playoffs1.5%Total votes: 476In fact the quality of the competition the Heat have beaten has been so poor it's hard to put into words, so I'll put it into numbers instead: 111-176.

24 Dec 10 Warriors-Kings: After 2-0 Start, Golden State Falls 116-97

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesIt's preseason. The games and the scores are meaningless. But this one had to be painful for Warriors players and fans alike. After a nine-point victory just two days earlier over this same Kings team, the Warriors looked very much like their old selves in Reebok Green Bay Packers 21 Charles Woodson Realtree camo Jersey
the defeat.Too many three-pointers—2-12, after coach Keith Smart emphasized that he's teaching the difference between a good shot and a bad one—and being outmatched on the rebounds, 46-33, sure seem like continuing themes from seasons past. And these are issues that many Warriors fans hoped would be gone after former coach Don Nelson took his small ball style back to his beach house in Maui. It's hard to blame the Warriors for relying on the three-point shot too much, as it has often been their equalizer for their generous defense in years past.Add that to their blistering 14-21 showing in their 40-point drubbing of the Los Angeles Clippers in their exhibition opener, and one would think the Warriors might jack it at any and every opportunity. But in the two games since, the Warriors have shot just 5-32 from deep, including 2-12 in the loss. The Warriors marksmen—Vladimir Radmonivic, Dorrell Wright, Monta Ellis—were off their mark to say the least as the trio shot just 1-10 combined from the three-point line. And to be frank, the trio was not that much better from the field, combining for just 13-37.Another problem area for the Warriors was the lack of offense off the bench. Reggie Williams—D-League call Reebok Minnesota Vikings #84 Randy Moss Realtree camo Jersey
up last season and presumed super-sub heading into the season—has struggled since dropping 20 in the Warriors opener. In the two matchups with Sacramento, Williams has totaled just 11 points on 4-15 shooting.Another should-be bench boost from Brandan Wright was mysteriously lost after Smart gave a healthy Wright the night off. Wright has played just 33 minutes in the Warriors three contests. But shooting—as Warriors fans are well aware—comes and goes in spurts. The Warriors will not shoot 16 percent from deep all season.Rather, the main concern for Golden State should be the dominance that the Kings showed on the glass. A renewed focus on rebounding led the Warriors to a +13 advantage in their first two contests, but Sacramento grabbed 46 rebounds in the contest to Golden State's 33.The Kings first draft choice, DeMarcus Cousins—who many Warriors fans hoped would slip to them one pick later—appeared more like the player that Sacramento fans envisioned when David Stern announced the selection. After struggling from the field in the first matchup 7-18, Cousins was a much more efficient scorer this time around, 6-12, to finish with 20 points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes. In the two contests against the Warriors, Cousins totaled 37 points and 19 rebounds. The Warriors prize offseason acquisition, David Lee, did what he does best—grabbing 10 rebounds, but the rest of the team combined for just 22.Andris Biedrins, who many Warriors fans envision returning to his former double double self after an injury-plagued 2009-10 campaign, grabbed just three rebounds in 27 minutes.Dorrell Wright had two rebounds in his 33 minutes. And even Jeff Adrien, who is fightingReebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
for the final roster spot, followed his 15-rebound effort in the first Kings game with just one rebound in 10 minutes. It's still preseason, and it still doesn't matter. But the Warriors issues—the same ones that have hindered their performance for years—need to be fixed before the season starts if they want to be the sleeper team in the West that many think they can be.

23 Dec 10Miami Heat: Are Heat Fans the Worst in the NBA?

Carlo Allegri/Getty ImagesWhen Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James all took their talents to South Beach this summer, the rally at the American Airlines Arena was impressive.Thousands of fans came to support the free agency coup that Pat Riley amazingly managed to pull off.But what fans wouldn't?No matter your opinion of the talent of the Miami Thrice or your thoughts on how team chemistry will influence the Heat's ability to win, every NBA fan acknowledges the excitement of having two of the best players in the league as well as a top five power forward on the court to start the game.Yet, Miami fans have been simply terrible in supporting their team.Fans show up late, leave early, and often fail to enthusiastically support players when the team has New England Patriots jersey
been struggling.Consequently, the Miami Heat have rolled out their "Fan Up Miami" program to attempt to encourage Heat fans to be better supporters of their team.Included in the "Fan Up Miami" program are:"Fan Up means being in your seat for tip-off...and staying there until the final buzzer""Fan Up means standing up and making some noise for your Miami Heat"Jamie Squire/Getty Images"Fan Up means there is nothing fashionable about showing up late""Fan Up means the early bird gets the goodies (we'll provide the goodies)"The promotion is summed up by the line: "It's time to show that HEAT fans do deserve this team, and this is an opportunity. It's time to show what real Miami fans are made of."The fact that the Miami Heat have to roll out such a plan is absolutely embarrassing.Whether or not you believe that the Heat have the best roster in the league, Cleveland was coming out to see LeBron James. They demonstrated true, albeit irrational, emotion when they burned his jerseys and made videos lampooning New Orleans Saints jersey
him.The late 1990s were the glory days of the Miami Heat fan. The passion seen in mutual dislike between Knicks and Heat fans is something Miami has been missing since moving into the AAA from the Miami Arena.Even the NBA Championship run in 2006 lacked the same intensity demonstrated after P.J. Brown threw Charlie Ward in the stands and Jeff Van Gundy was dragged by Alonzo Mourning. This is by no means an indictment of all Miami Heat fans. Some Heat fans are the most passionate, knowledgeable fans in the league.Maybe it's the fact that prices are so ridiculously high.Maybe there are simply too many regular season games to show enthusiasm for—After all, who has the energy on a Tuesday night to yell at the top of their lungs to support the Heat New York Giants jersey
against the Sacramento Kings?Still, the fact remains that the Heat fans absence of emotion for this team has been symbolic of their 7-4 start to the year. The Heat have one of the best teams in the league this year, it's time for the people of Miami to start acting like it.

NBA Free Agency: Knicks Sign Amar'e Stoudemire To Five-Year, $100 Million Deal

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesAccording to sources, Amare Stoudemire just signed a 5-year contract with the New York Knicks, worth a whopping 100 million dollars. The Knicks positioned themselves even better now to win over LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers.Knicks fans’ frustrations of past years could now be gone with the signing of Stoudemire. This signing puts the team on the right track for the foreseeable future. In fact, the NY Knicks have put themselves in a great position to sign either James or Carmelo Anthony of Tennessee Titans jersey
the Denver Nuggets. Sources close to the situation have said that the prolific Nugget scorer will not resign with the Nuggets because his wife, former MTV host LaLa Vasquez wants to reside in the Big Apple for career reasons. As a result of these happenings, the Knicks could be in the driver’s seat.Even with or without LeBron, the Knicks will come out of this free agency sweepstakes with a lot of gusto. In fact, it would serve LeBron well to sign with the Knicks because if he doesn’t Carmelo will be the next mega NBA star to join Stoudemire on Broadway.Who would have thought that the New York Knicks would be in such a great position to sign either LeBron or Anthony? No one! In fact, the Knicks can do without LeBron. With Anthony on the 2010-2011 NBA free agency radar, the Knicks can wait until 2011 to sign Carmelo because the team would be getting someone who really wants to play in New York. Therefore, the Knicks does not have to give in to LeBron’s demands if they do not want to do so. Washington Redskins jersey
In addition, both Carmelo and his wife were born in Brooklyn, according to sources. So, there must be truth to the story that he would not mind coming back to his place of birth to play for his native team, the New York Knicks.Submit Your Promo Articles on Mstardom and Advertise Your Products and Services for Free!

MLB Rumors: Cliff Lee and the Yankees

Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesInstead of writing new post after new post, I’ve decided to just keep updating this article throughout the day with new Cliff Lee information. So bookmark this page or keep refreshing because this is where all the Lee rumors will be unless there is something really worthy of a new post.Update 6:00: Andrew Marchand updates us that the Yankees, Brian Cashman and Randy Levine, have met with Lee’s agent just a little while ago. Buster Olney said that during the meeting, no offers were made or parameters laid out.Earlier in the day Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
Jon Heyman heard that the Rangers were planning a four-year offer to Lee. Heyman surmises that they may change that though since it sounds like the Yankees could go six years.Original post: According to both Buster Olney of ESPN and Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the Yankees are meeting with Cliff Lee and his agent today to discuss a potential deal.No word on if an offer will be made or not today, but even if one isn’t extended today, expect things to get serious very quickly. Team president Randy Levine is in Orlando likely for this very specific reason.Don’t get too excited by this though. Lee’s agent Darek Braunecker has been quoted as saying “It’s good to be Cliff Lee,” meaning his client is highly sought after right now and will potentially be paid very well.Lee’s agent did confirm that more teams than just the Yankees and Rangers are interested in him, but he didn’t specifically name any of them.Related StoriesDecember 7, 2010 -- Yankees Rumors: Cliff Lee Wants 7-Year Deal Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey

20 Dec 10 College Football Odds: UCLA Getting a Touchdown Against USC

Give me something to cheer for!Ronald Martinez/Getty ImagesThirty-three years of PAC-10 conference competition will come to end on Saturday night when the Bruins host the Trojans in the 71st meeting between the two schools, they last before Colorado and Utah join the newly mathematically correct Pac-12 in 2011.USC leads the all time series 42 to 28 with seven ties and has won 10 of the last 11 meetings against UCLA, with the Bruins lone win coming in a 2006, in a game at the Rose Bowl by a 13-9 margin. Our college football odds show the Trojans as -6 ½ over the Bruins with a game total of 54.It’s been a disappointing season for UCLA’s Rick Neuheisal as the Bruins wrap up a season that has shown little signs of progress. After suffering through two straight losses to begin this year’s campaign, the Bruins miraculously sprang to life with three straight shockers against Houston, Texas, and Washington, before going on another three game skid, losing five of its final six heading into Saturday’s season finale.Injuries have taken any wind that may have started to fill the Bruins sails, including a major setback when starting QB Kevin Prince was sidelined for the remainder of the season after exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in October. No. 2 quarterback Richard Brehaut was thrust into the new Bruins offense, and after starting in just a few games himself suffered a concussion in a game against Washington two weeks ago. Last Friday however, a healthy Brehaut bounced back breaking Troy Aikman’s school record for 33 completions in a single game in a 55-34 loss at Arizona State. But you can’t just blame the sophomore for the Bruins woes. More fault could nfl jerseybe put on the UCLA defense that has been giving it up 30.5 points and 415.2 yards per game. Not good when your offense is averaging just 20.7 points per game and 312.9 yards per contest. However, there is an upside to the Bruins offense. It’s running game, led by back Jonathan Franklin who has at times carried the entire offense New Orleans Saints jerseyon his shoulders. The sophomore speedster has rushed for 1,018 yards and seven touchdowns. He is flanked by Derrick Coleman who has also contributed in the effort with 462 yards and five touchdowns, and he averages 6.1 yards per carry. Meanwhile, WR Taylor Embree leads the team in receptions with just 25 for 333 yards, but is still without a touchdown, which illustrates just who abysmal the passing attack has been.As for USC, well it hasn’t been a dream season either for first year head coach Lane Kiffin. The Trojans are feeling the ramifications of NCAA sanctions that have resulted in a tormented program. The Trojans will likely return QB Matt Barkley, who missed the Notre Dame game last week with a sprained ankle. He should have little trouble carving up the UCLA secondary that will likely be creeping up to help stop running back Mark Tyler who leads the team in rushing with 868 yards Chicago Bears jerseyand nine touchdowns. All that ground commotion could open passing lanes for Barkley to connect with leading receivers Robert Woods and Ronald Johnson. As good as the offense has been, which is ordinary at best, like the Bruins, you have to place a large amount of blame for the Trojans losses on a defense that has given up big points this season, and have allowed 20 or more points in seven of their last eight games. This contest is shaping up to be somewhat of a scoring fest as neither team’s defense is really capable of stopping any sustained attack. However, the flip side is two mediocre offenses. Based on that, the return of USC’s Barkley gives the Trojans the edge in this one.Matt’s Free Prediction: USC 31, UCLA 27Interested in making some money this college football season? 19 Dec 10 Road Struggles Continue For The St. Louis Rams: OT Loss To The 49ers

Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesNovember 1st, 2009—that was the date of the last Rams' win on the road. Ironically, it was also St. Louis' only win last season.Steve Spagnuolo's boys from St. Louis defeated the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. Um, not exactly the best of road wins, but they would obviously take it.The Rams were legitimately this close to a win at Candlestick Park in San Francisco yesterday. They had the 49ers on the ropes.Well, at least that's what we thought.San Francisco, led by second string quarterback Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
Troy Smith (filling in for injured starter Alex Smith), managed to convert a first down after having 3rd and 32 followed by 4th and 18 in the final four minutes of regulation. Both plays went to workhorse Frank Gore, one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the NFL.The 49ers went on to score with a pass to wideout Michael Crabtree, putting them in the lead 20-17. The Rams would answer, however.Rookie QB Sam Bradford, who has been solid all season, was successful on his first two minute drill in the NFL (maybe even his first two minute drill ever;OUrarely had to travel the length of the field for a score ina short amount of time).Sam The Ramcompleted seven of nine passes for 70 yards, and should have completed another;tight end Daniel Fells dropped a 2nd down pass inside the 49ers' red zone that probably could have resulted in a touchdown.Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesUnfortunately, when the Rams won the toss in overtime,Bradford and his offense failed to produce. They settled, instead, for a measly three and out.Bradford's emotions were mixed after the game:"You can always take value out of things," he said."I'm really proud of the way we hung in there and fought. We had struggled in the fourth quarter. It would have been really easy for us as an offense to come out and take another three and out, but that's not what we did."We had confidence in ourselves. We knew that once we got the ball back, we were going to march it down the field and score. And that's what we Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey
did."You would have liked to have gotten a touchdown there to end it in regulation, but to get a field goal and send it to overtime, you can always look at that as a positive."Bradford continued, "I felt great about our chances. We had put pressure on their defense. They were probably a little tired after that two minute drill. I thought we had a great chance to come out and gash them right off the bat. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the first down. It's tough."It is tough, Sam. Having an NFL team's offense placed in your hands as a rookie is tough.Leading a 1-15 team to a 4-5 start is tough. Winning on the road is...tough. But if you want to be a playoff team, it has to be done."A game is a game," O-linemen Adam Goldberg said after Sunday's loss. "I don't know about you (media) guys, but the players, we really don't care if we're at home or on the road. Obviously it's nice when you are at home playing in front of your fans but it's not like we think playing on the road is a huge disadvantage. It's not something that we put much thought or concern into."That's interesting, because, you see, the Rams are 4-1 at home and 0-4 on the road this season. Clearly, it's not simply "a game."This is the second game of the season that the Rams have legitimately given away. As I said earlier, the Rams' D had the 49ers with 3rd and long, followed by 4th and 18, which they converted, leading to a score. If they get a stop there, the game ends instead of heading to OT where San Fran kicked a field goal to win it.Earlier in the Reebok Denver Broncos #15 Tim Tebow Realtree camo Jersey
season, the Rams blew a 17-3 lead in Tampa Bay.Really, the Rams record should look more like 6-3.Unfortunately, the NFL does not appoint a committee to choose teams for the playoffs based on potential and close games. No, you have to win games to move on.The Rams will simplyhave to win on the road in order to make the postseason.

18 Dec 10 NFL: How Important Is the Bye Week, and Is It Fair To All?

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesThe NFL isin thebusinessof high impact entertainment, but in order to doso the NFLmust keepit's players in tip top shape. When the season starts playerswant their bodiesto be able to handleany physical situationthat comes their way.During a NFL season players take ever little precaution they can to keep their body in playing form. Sometimes that means lowering the amount of weight that you lift in the weight room or just getting to bed early. Players take advantage of the down time between games so they can get as much Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey

When the bi-week comes around coaches cut down practice time and give players two days off during the week so players have time to heal their wounds and rest their bodies.Jed Jacobsohn/Getty ImagesThe bi-week is a very controversial subject between players because of its timing during the season. Some teams get the bi-week early in the year and others get it late. There is no way to please everyone when talking about the bi-week,if theNFLowner's union had it their way they would get ridof the bi-week all together giving the owners one more game to makemoney. The bi-week will be somethingin thepast beforelong, taking players off the field loses money for everyone except the players. In the next five years the 18 game schedule will be thenew faceof theNFL. 16 Dec 10 Tennessee Titans Struggles: Can We Believe In Rusty Smith?

Otto Greule Jr/Getty ImagesThe unpredictability of the 2010 season of the Tennessee Titans continued after Vince Young had another emotional breakdown in Sunday's loss to the Redskins. It now be possible that Young will never take a snap for the Titans ever again, but Titans owner Bud Adams is Reebok Pittsburg Steelers #83 Heath Miller Realtree camo Jersey
intent on keeping Young on the team. But now it's time to think immediate future, and rookie Rusty Smith is that immediate future for the Titans at quarterback. It may not be an ideal situation, but Jeff Fisher and company have to roll with the punches. Kerry Collins is still dealing with a calf injury and it is unclear when he'll return as the starter. Chris Simms was also signed to be the No.2 quarterback to Smith this week. Smith didn't look sharp in his first NFL action, but who can blame him? He was thrown into the fire and Fisher acknowledged that after the game. His one great throw ended up coming back on an offensive pass interference call on Randy Moss. It was a beautifully thrown ball to the endzone and Fisher needs to build off that in practice this week. Smith seemed to look Moss's way more often and just had trouble getting his timing down. The real test will come in Smith's first career NFL start against the Texans. Lucky for Smith, he'll get the make his debut as a starter against one of the NFL's worst pass defenses in the Texans. Otto Greule Jr/Getty ImagesColts McCoy would've killed for that, but he got the Steelers. Smith played his college ball at Florida Atlantic and was a surprise pick by the Titans in the sixth round of last year's draft. His last season Reebok Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald Realtree camo Jersey
with Florida Atlantic, Smith finished with 14 touchdown passes and nearly 2,000 yards passing. Despite all of this quarterback shuffling, the Titans still only sit one game back of the division-leading Colts. Titans fans should be counting their blessings because a normal year in the AFC South would have the Titans well out of the playoff picture. All in not lost here with Smith running things for the next couple weeks. Fisher will figure out a way to adapt to the situation, and Chris Johnson seems to be hitting his stride now that Moss is in the mix. Reebok Baltimore Ravens #5 Joe Flacco Realtree camo Jersey
What the Titans need Smith to do is manage the game rather than trying to be a savior to the season. Smith just doesn't have the tools yet to be that kind of quarterback in the NFL. Let's give Smith a chance to show what he can do after a week's full of starter reps before we jump ship on this season. What we should really worry about is the foolish penalties, something that led to the demise of the Dallas Cowboys earlier this season.

Panthers vs. Browns: Cleveland Has Much To Be Thankful For After 24-23 Win

Matt Sullivan/Getty ImagesForgive me for sounding like a nervous Nancy, but after watching the Cleveland Browns narrowly escape the lowly 1-9 Carolina Panthers with a 24-23 win, Browns fans everywhere may have collectively suffered a major anxiety attack. While 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
I'm very happy that the Browns improved to 4-7, this feels more like a loss than Cleveland's fourth win of the season, this is more like a shallow and hollow victory that was a case of luck rather than earned on the field. There is simply no excuse for the Browns to have even been in this late-second John Kasay missed field goal cardiac-inducing situation in the first place when they had the superior team on the field today. There is no excuse for allowing a rookie quarterback like Jimmy Clausen to nearly perform a John Elway-like comeback on the road. And there is no excuse for not pounding the ball on the ground with Peyton Hillis against the 24th-ranked run defense in the league. Cleveland has a lot to be thankful for, considering that they have made a habit of blowing fourth-quarter leads, but for once they came out on the winning end as they improved to 2-5 in games decided by seven points or less. And while it has taken Brian Daboll 11 games into the season to actually get the ball down field to the wide receivers not named Joshua Cribbs, it was really good to see Brian Robiskie and Carlton Mitchell finally involved. Matt Sullivan/Getty ImagesCleveland should be thankful that without Peyton Hillis and his Herculean three-touchdown effort today that they would have indeed lost. Hillis WAS the Browns entire offense in the first half, why they went away from him in the second half is a Richard Castle-like mystery to Browns fans everywhere. Cleveland should be thankful that they finally got their first glimpse of sixth-round pick Carlton Mitchell, as he had one rush for nine yards on a end-around play, but to see his ability to read blocks and speed on the edge finally gave Cleveland a taste of what he can do in the 10 Santonio Holmes White jersey
Cleveland offense. Cleveland should be thankful that their soft and fundamentally poor tackling did not help them lose a game, at least not THIS time, as with the New York and Jacksonville games, the Browns once again has aopposingQB or RB stopped only to let them slip away for a big play, such as Carolina running back Mike Goodson's 32-yard run on a Clausen third-and-10 pass. How is is that Browns defensive coordinator Rex Ryan is EVEN mentioned for a possible head coaching job in the NFL is beyond me, when his fellow players cannot even properly tackle, let alone wrap up? Cleveland should be especially thankful that after becoming the second team in NFL history to lose when getting six turnovers in a game that they were able to win when Brown's quarterback, Jake Delhomme throws two interceptions, including a nicely gift-wrapped pass that was almost telegraphed right to Carolina defensive back Captain Munnerlyn, who would return it 37 yards for a touchdown. Especially when that team has a rookie QB that has completed roughly 53 percent of his passes; where was the Browns blitz and pressure all day? With the exception of the three sacks that Cleveland got, Clausen was actually allowed to make some decent throws all game and that cannot continue to happen. Daboll really needs to be more creative again and learn to use all of his personnel more, including wide receiver, Carlton Mitchell more in the offense. While it was nice to finally see Brian Robiskie and Chansi Stuckey get involved, a Mitchell-Massaquoi-Moore tandem could be deadly for opposing defenses. Mangini needs to man up and either sit Jake Delhomme for the rest of theseasonor cut him, whichever comes firstbecauseall Browns fans canattestto the fact that watching him under center is a nerve-racking experience to say the least. While he did distribute the ball well today by going 24-of-35 for 245 yards, his herky-jerky sidearm throws are very risky and often inaccurate, he has no mobility to 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
speak off and his knack for making a bone-headed play is simply Derek Anderson-like at times. Delhomme almost cost the Browns this game, and while we should all be thankful for the win, let's be hopeful that the football gods bless either Seneca Wallace or Colt McCoy with a speedy recovery. Browns fans everywhere are just thankful for the win.

Pittsburgh Steelers:Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger Has a Broken Foot Or Does He?

Rick Stewart/Getty ImagesTurns out there's more bad news for Pittsburgh Steelers fans. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette is reporting that Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a broken foot. "Turns out the 'sprained' right foot of Steelers quarterback Ben Roehlisberger actually is 6 Sanchez Green Jersey
broken. The fifth metatarsal bone or the outside metatarsal on Roethlisberger's right foot is broken, the Post-Gazette has learned. It was injured during the first quarter of Sunday's game in Buffalo. The Steelers have been listing the foot as sprained. Roethlisberger went through another practice today and has said he fully expects to play in Baltimore this Sunday night. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said after practice that Roethlisberger's injury should not curtail anything he does on the field in Baltimore. " - Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post GazetteBouchette is usually a reliable source and I trust that he had some very credible information. However, as soon as this news broke, ESPN reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers denied that Roethlisberger's foot was broken. The Steelers, who have listed the quarterback's foot as sprained, denied that Roethlisberger's foot was broken in a statement Thursday. The team said the injury is simply "an aggravation of an old injury where scar tissue is present." -2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey

The Steelers are missing their two starting offensive tackles, and Aaron Smith, who is arguably their most important defensive player. Roethlisberger is going to try and play so no one will be able to call him soft and should earn a lot of respect by his teammates and his detractors. Roethlisberger is 7-2 as a starter against the Ravens in his career, which includes five straight wins. Big Ben missed last year's meeting at Baltimore which was also a prime-time game. Dennis Dixon filled in for Big Ben and played decent Dallas Cowboys jersey

Josh McDaniels Out As Head Coach

McDaniels is out as head coach of the Denver BroncosVIA The Cover TwoAfter starting his career 6-0 with the Denver Broncos, head coach Josh McDaniels then lost 17 of his last 20 games, and today owner Pat Bolwen relieved McDaniels of his coaching duties. The move comes as a 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
surprise, not because McDaniels is a good coach, but because last week Bowlen told the media that McDaniels would coach the Broncos in 2011.On top of that, the Broncos will now be paying three different coaches in 2011 after losing both Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. This now makes McDaniels the third coach fired so far this season following in the steps of Wade Phillips (Dallas) and Brad Childress (Vikings). It isn’ttoo surprising considering the fact that McDaniels was recently fined $50,000 because a videographer on his staff recorded a walkthrough of the 49ers football team.McDaniels was on very thin ice following that incident and the recent loss to the Chiefs on Sunday probably didn’t help.McDaniels will probably be known Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
best for his ability to make everybody hate him.During his tenure in Denver he lost a franchise quarterback, a top 10 wide receiver, a great defensive coordinator in Mike Nolan, and was involved in Spygate 2.o.I’m sure the people in Denver won’t be missing him anytime soon.UPDATE: According toAdam Schefter, RB coach Eric Studesville will be the Broncos interim head coach.

Pittsburgh Steelers "The Great 18: Unit evaluation for 2008"

Neal Coolong will go over all 18 positional units on the Steelers and rank them in terms of priority this offseason. Each player on Pittsburgh's roster in 2007 will be evaluated leading up to the start of the free agency period on March 3, based on the Steelers' need to address that position with a change at starter, a free-agent pickup or a draft choice. 12. Strong safety:Troy Polamalu, sixth season; Tyrone Carter, ninth season. If we didn't need confirmation of anything from the Steelers in 2007, it was that SS Troy Polamalu is a fantastic player, and Tyrone 36 Bettis Black Jersey
Carter is not. Nothing against Carter, the scrappiest player on the team, but clearly, down the stretch, the Steelers suffered without Polamalu (knee injuries hampered him throughout 2007). The Steelers tried Carter in Polamalu's spot, and they also put in free safety Anthony Smith on the strong side, with Carter moving to free. Neither experiment worked particularly well. While it's basically impossible to improve on Polamalu as a player, the team might want to address a general lack of depth at the strong safety position. Polamalu is such a physical player, he is constantly the first defender to the ball. It's going to take its toll after a while. Maybe 2007 was the first injury-plagued season of his career. The Steelers would be wise to see if they can find a rookie to try to oust Carter from the primary backup job. 11. Nose tackle:Casey Hampton, eighth season; Chris Hoke, eighth season; Scott Paxson, third season.Much like at strong safety, the Steelers were tested in terms of depth at nose tackle in 2007. Hampton is one of the game's best nose tackles, and the team has no current plans to change its base formation to a 4-3 alignment. But there's nothing to say they won't take a stud NT if one is available on the cheap. The Steelers dime formation had Hampton on the sideline, with Hoke and DE Brett Keisel standing in front of the offensive line. Hampton isn't a significant part of the nickel set, either, clearly indicating the team is happy with Hoke's pass-rushing skills and wish to keep Hampton fresh to 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
stop the run. AFC champion New England is able to mix in a 4-3 look with the personnel it has up front. Will Pittsburgh want to mix in something like that? The Steelers certainly could, and while Hoke has been a solid player for the team, adding another lineman better suited for the under tackle position would be the place to start.

San Francisco 49ers Cody Picket

Joe Montana. Steve Young. Those are the two quarterbacks that are synonymous with San Francisco 49ers football. They led the 49ers to five super bowl titles, Montana with four, Young with one. Montana was with the team from 1979-1992. Young joined the team in 1987, but started 6 Sanchez White Jersey
from 1992-1999. However, those days of consistency at the quarterback position are long gone.So far this year the 49ers quarterback position has been a revolving door. Tim Rattay. Alex Smith. Ken Dorsey. All have started a game. Now add Cody Pickett to the list. Rattay started one week then was traded. In the following two games rookie quarterback and #1 overall pick Alex Smith started. Smith injured his knee in his second start and gave way to Ken Dorsey. In Ken Dorsey's first start, he was unable to finish due to an injured ankle. Cody Pickett took over, and will get his first start this week. If your counting at home, that's four different starting quarterbacks in five weeks for the 49ers. The quarterback situation has gotten so bad for the San Francisco 49ers that they brought in Jesse Palmer this week to be the backup quarterback. Yes, it's the same Jesse Palmer known as "The Bachelor." Palmer was drafted out of the University of Florida in the late 4th round by the New York Giants in the 2001 draft. He never saw much action, and in five years has thrown only 3 touchdowns, while throwing 4 interceptions.Cody Pickett will make his first career NFL start this Sunday against the red-hot New York Giants. Pickett was drafted out of the University of Washington with the 16th pick in the 7th round of the 2004 draft by the 49ers. He has a good arm and can be elusive, and he will need to use his feet this week to escape the smothering Giants pass rush. 6 Sanchez Green Jersey
The book on Pickett is that he is poised in the pocket, makes good decisions, but can't throw the deep ball well. It's been a tough season, filled with a bunch of learning experiences for the San Francisco 49ers. This Sunday should be no different when Pickett gets his first lesson.

San Francisco 49ers "Alex Smith eager to get reps with top three wide receivers"

The 49ers concluded their first week of 10 Santonio Holmes White jersey
OTAs last week, and quarterback Alex Smith told reporters that he felt great on the field. Absent from the field were his three primary receiving targets. Wideout Darrell Jackson will not participate with the team until training camp as he continues to recover from an injured toe that has plagued him since last season. Receivers Ashley Lelie (quad) and Arnaz Battle (hamstring) missed the last few days of OTAs for precautionary reasons. Despite the absence of his main receivers, Smith was on target and established a good rhythm with the players at his disposal. He was particularly impressed with Bryan Gilmore and Taylor Jacobs, completing a 30-yard pass to each of them. Although establishing a connection with his backup receivers is a good thing, Smith understands the importance of developing a solid rapport with his primary targets. "It's hard because I'll need those reps with those guys, but we do have plenty of time still in training camp," said Smith. Heading into his third season as the 49ers' signal-caller, Smith -- the No. 1 pick in the 2005 draft -- has yet to find a receiver whom he can depend on regularly. In his first two seasons, Smith hasn't had a single receiver gain more than 733 yards, a number that former 49ers Brandon Lloyd (2005) and Antonio Bryant (2006) accumulated. The most obvious choice from this year's group is the veteran Jackson, but that is contingent on him getting and staying healthy. He had three 1,000-yard seasons during his stint with the Seattle Seahawks and provides Smith with his most proven wideout to date. As a former first-round pick in 2002, Lelie is widely viewed as an underachiever. He had only one 1,000-yard season with the Denver Broncos in 2004, but his production has dropped each year since. He has an opportunity to turn his career around with the 49ers. He'll offer Smith a legitimate deep threat. Battle has increased his production every year. In 2006, he achieved career highs in receptions (59) and receiving yards (686), 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
and he should continue to be a solid option for Smith. When Smith has the opportunity to work with these three players, San Francisco's offense should become much more efficient. One thing's for sure: Smith is looking forward to having these guys back on the field. Take the first step towards an online degree at UniversityDegreeFinder.com

Tennessee Titans NFL Preview Steve McNair

The Tennessee Titans had high expectations heading into the 2004 season, but those were dashed early on after a rash of injuries. The most notable injury was to QB Steve McNair, who even contemplated retirement at the end of last season. The second most notable injury was to Chris Brown; the man who 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
replaced Titan great Eddie George. Jeff Fisher returns for his 11th season and with all the free agent losses the team has incurred, this may prove to be his toughest assignment yet.Team Strengths: Yes, even with all the free agent departures, most notably WR Derrick Mason and CB Samari Rolle (both went to the Baltimore Ravens) there do remain a few strong points. Last month, the Tennessee Titans acquired RB Travis Henry, who had been displaced in Buffalo. This gives them two 1,000 yard rushers. Henry went over 1,300 for the Bills in both 2002 and 2003, but lost his job to the team's top pick in 2003, Willis McGahee. No matter which one starts, both Travis Henry and Chris Brown will see action and this will help take a ton of pressure off Steve McNair. The Tennessee Titans had a great 2005 NFL Draft, not only getting West Virginia CB Adam Pac Man Jones (currently a holdout), but also adding three guys who give them much needed depth at wide receiver. Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby, and Roydell Williams won't come close to replacing Mason's numbers, but all three could develop into solid NFL players. Coach Fisher has also been impressed with the work second round pick OT Michael Roos has put in so far in camp; he could earn a starting role sometime during the season.Bringing in Norm Chow, who helped engineer the potent USC Trojans offense during their championship seasons in 2003 and 2004, as offensive coordinator may give this young offense a boost. His system will emphasize Steve McNair getting rid of the ball early, spread the ball around, and mix in the run with his two horses. Chow will definitely be an asset to the Titans offense.Weaknesses: Way too many holes and inexperienced guys on defense. The Titans will benefit from having OLB Peter Sirmon and the Rocky's (Calmus and Boiman) back and healthy to complement Keith Bulluck, who I believe is one of the best in the league. But, fact remains, the secondary was weak last season, and with Rolle and Andre Dyson gone, it could be worse. Pacman Jones is considered their most talented player in the secondary, but if he doesn't get into camp soon, or gets in trouble with the law again, there could be major problems (you know you're in trouble when you're counting on a rookie to lead your secondary). Tony Beckham and Andre Woolfolk will hold down the reigns for now, with the team hoping safety Tank Williams will be ready for the season after tearing his ACL mid-way through 2004. Lamont Thompson is the other safety and there's not much depth behind them. The front four is talented, but either unproven or injury prone. DT Albert Haynesworth is the best of the bunch, but his last season was cut short by elbow problems. They do have depth on the defensive line, but those guys have very little experience.Another glaring weakness could be in the kicking game, where Joe Nedney and Gary "Father Time" Anderson were let go. That leaves journeymen Ola Kimrin and Rob Bironas battling for place kicking duties. The punt and kick return jobs are also up for grabs since Jones is still holding out. Also WR Drew Bennett had a nice season in 2004 (80 catches 1,247 yards) but will need the young guys to grow up fast. TE Ben Troupe is improving and will be a nice target for Steve McNair.Overview: This is going to be a very long year for Fisher's team. Too many questions but not enough players to answer them. Having a healthy Steve McNair would be an upgrade from Billy Volek, but with all his injuries it's not a certainty. Chow will make the team interesting to watch, but none of these young receivers are going to replace Mason, which 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
leaves only Bennett as the lone dependable target downfield. As I stated earlier, the defense could be horrible; the best you can hope for is below average. This is not good enough when you play Peyton Manning, Byron Leftwich, and David Carr twice a year. The Tennessee Titans will be hard pressed to match last years 5-11 record; 4-12 or 3-13 is very possible

Franchise tight end Dallas Clark won’t be burdened by franchise tag

Who else would use Dallas Clark the way the do? It’s not in the manipulative buy-a-lady-jewels-and-get-no-return sense of the word “use,” either: the team gets indispensable value from an elite pass-catching tight end, while he gets to remain with a squad that employs him utterly perfectly and features a cast around him ranging from all-time greats to2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
current very goods. Locked in theoretically through 2013 thanks to his new deal, Clark has plenty of time to continue working successfully with this little proficient group.Clark earned his deal with great tight end-level numbers last season, nabbing 58 catches for 616 yards and an impressive 11 touchdowns. While they stand on their own, his contributions were even more vital when one considers that he stepped up when necessary. He caught 30 passes during the Super Bowl season; while he only played 12 regular season games in 2006 compared to 15 last year, the fact remains that he filled a void caused by Marvin Harrison’s absence this past year, which gives crucial significance to his statistical upsurge. And he brings more than numbers. Clark is someone fans really need to watch play in order to appreciate: specifically, his calmness during the normal duress of an NFL game is remarkable. Action percolating all around, he coolly finds an open patch of territory, makes his reception without the slightest trace of franticness, and heads downfield while eluding opponents with total composure. In the midst of a violent tempest, Clark comes across like a very athletic Bob Ross without the white guy Afro.He also serves as a throwback in a more direct manner regarding this franchise and his position. While in Baltimore, the Colts featured one of the first tight ends who dominated the game primarily as a receiver in John Mackey; Clark, who won the 2002 Mackey Award at Iowa as college football’s best tight end, is extending that legacy, even if he’s certainly not in the earlier player’s class as a field-stretching trailblazer en route to the Hall of Fame.Threatening the defense as a receiver from the end of the offensive line is devastating to the opponent and a remarkably unique gift for the player in question to possess, not to mention that Clark can also usefully line up as a wideout in a demonstration of skill paired with versatility. The 24th overall pick of the 2003 draft, he’s also part of a group of current receivers on his team that has excelled fantastically after being drafted in the second half of the first round, one that includes Harrison, Reggie Wayne, and promising youngster Anthony Gonzalez. It’s a testament to the abilities of both Bill Polian and Peyton Manning, but it also indicates that each member of the platoon contributes without individually demanding much attention. Talent and chemistry combine and lead to annual dominance. And Clark will be part of that unit for at least a few more years. An added bonus of the long-term contract is that neither this team nor its fans will have to deal with a year of franchise tag resentment by the player, an understandable frustration for stars who want lasting security in an insecure profession. To be accurate, he did spend approximately 24 hours under the label, as the team tagged him on February 19 before he signed this deal on the 20th; I feel it’s safe to declare the contentious day 10 Santonio Holmes White jersey
won’t affect his play in 2008.Plus, the tight end position won’t have to be addressed in either free agency or the draft, meaning the team can focus its attention on other positions or even relax as other teams fight and claw over available receivers. Now, Clark gets stability instead of being forced to endure a single-year deal while the team gets to keep an exceptional tight end in its arsenal. Helping each other out is a lot better than one party heartlessly mooching off the second, as both the franchise and receiver will mutually benefit from a contract that means he’ll keep bewildering pass defenses for some time.

Seattle Seahawks MNF Preview

On Sunday, teams of the AFC West had no difficulty winning their respective games. Denver rolled through Pittsburgh, 31-20; Kansas City topped St. Louis by 14; and San Diego ran through Cleveland, 32-25.On Monday night, the remaining one-fourth of the division, the , will compete with a Steelers 10 Santonio Holmes jersey
former one-fifth of the AFC West, the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle, which was a member of the West up until the league's re-alignment in 2002, has a long, competitive history with the once-rival Raiders. Oakland holds the historical advantage over its former foe, 28-23; however, just 68 points separate the all-time head-to-head matchup.Another set of unusual circumstances -- due to both injury and the weather -- will likely make for another unpredictable meeting between the two teams. With the Raiders coming off two consecutive wins and Seattle coming off two losses, let's take a look how Oakland can make it three in a row for both teams.Derrick Burgess and the downpour: The 26-year-old Seneca Wallace will be starting just his second NFL game on Monday night. The Iowa State grad, who started last week in a 35-28 loss at Kansas City, completed 50 percent of his passes for 198 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. In the previous week, Wallace came in to replace starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who injured his right knee early in the second half. In the face of pressure, Wallace threw two interceptions and fumbled twice, losing one, en route to a 31-13 thrashing at the hands of Minnesota. On Monday night, the forecast for the young quarterback is equally as gloomy -- literally. The gameday forecast calls for a 100 percent chance of precipitation, with winds from the south gusting at 21 mph. Veteran defensive end Derrick Burgess, who entered the week tied for the NFL's fifth-ranked sack spot, will likely have no trouble in the rain repeating his last two weeks performances. The 28-year-old has recorded four sacks in the team's last two wins; and, on Monday, may be lining up opposite backup Tom Ashworth, who would replace injured starting right tackle Sean Locklear. By Tuesday morning, Burgess may find himself much closer to the top of the NFL's sack list.Andrew Walter and mistakes: Walter referred to his offensive showing in last week's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers as "ridiculous" and "pathetic." The 24-year-old quarterback completed just five passes for 51 yards and one interception in the team's 20-13 win. The one interception, however, was Walter's lone turnover on the game, as opposed to the two turnovers per game he had averaged in his previous four starts. On Monday, Walter will need to remain equally as disciplined, while still trying to improve in both completions and yardage against Seattle's 28th-ranked pass defense. Conditions will be wet and unwelcoming for the sophomore quarterback; however, he will need to find a way to win the game-long battle of field position, which will be dependent on his ability to hold onto the ball. With one of the league's top-ranked defenses on his side, Walter should have no problem settling for punts instead of risky throws.Rushing attack: LaMont Jordan, as usual, is listed as "questionable" heading into the team's prime-time appearance. Whether he appears or not, however, shouldn't affect the Raiders' game plan. Running backs Justin Fargas and Zack Crockett have received the bulk of the team's carries over the past two weeks, working efficiently behind a subpar offensive line.Although Jordan practiced on Friday, Fargas should remain a viable option for the Raiders' rushing attack. In two wins, the 220-pound halfback has carried the ball 41 times for just 121 yards, but has reduced the 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
number of costly backwards runs that Jordan frequently turned in. If Oakland expects to win its first game on the road, both running backs will need to consistently run north-to-south. If Fargas and Jordan can flashback to the days of Garner and Wheatley, the should have no trouble defeating the former division-rival Seattle Seahawks.Want to be in the Raiders mailbag?
